Ngā Hapū o Te Ahuahu represents a collective of four hapū (Te Uri Taniwha, Ngāti Hineira, Ngāti Korohue, Te Whānau Whero) who have current and historical interests across the rohe of Taiāmai. This stretches from Te Ahuahu maunga and Lake Omapere and their surrounds, spreading out eastward following the Waitangi River to Waitangi and the Bay of Island and out to Te Kerikeri and Te Haupārua Inlet to name a few locations.
With the support of our collective hapū, the working group has organised two wānanga (January 2024 and April 2024) to introduce uri to some of our areas and sites of significance, which feature in our hapū connected Waitangi Tribunal claims.
Hapū uri will be introduced to sites that were wrongfully taken by the Crown and its agents via deceit, theft, force, policy, and legislation. It’s through having these ongoing wānanga of sharing of information and kōrero that informs and educates us all. Only once our collective hapū descendants can understand why there are historical claims against the Crown, that hapū will be able to have informed and full kōrero amongst ourselves as to what future redress & settlement may look like for us, whilst maintaining our hapū rangatiratanga.
This first wānanga will be held during Auckland Anniversary weekend and will focus in and around the Kerikeri Inlet and Waitangi, connecting us to both our He Whakaputanga & Te Tiriti documents, as well as the lands our hapū, rangatira, tupuna lived & harvested from. Our wānanga around Kerikeri inlet & whenua wānanga will be led by Ricky Ashby a WAI1131 claimant on behalf of his parents Monica & Arthur Ashby who shared their knowledge and significant research for this claim.
All registered uri will have received an email & uri who have left their email details at quarterly gatherings, will have received an email RSVP on 17th Dec.
If you didn’t receive an email and wish to attend please register with us and we will send you the RSVP and wānanga details.
