Fiscal Hosting – Open Collective NZ – OCNZ (Company Option) & the Gift Collective (Charity Option)
Below is information on the Open Collective and the fiscal hosting they do under their two arms for 1. For-profit orgnisations and 2. Not-for-profit/charitable organisations.
Our communications team has been using Open Collective since March 2022 as a temporary structure. In November 2022, hapū agreed for hapū to join the open collective. This info page was requested at that hui. Below are two videos that are great explainers. The first is the Open Collective how it started and what its initiative is. The second video is from Open Collective NZ explaining what it does in more detail, and the two arms it has. 1. For-profit organisations and 2. Not-for-profit/charitable organisations.
You can visit our Ngā Hapū o Te Ahuahu, Open Collective page HERE where everyone is able to make online contributions and decide what projects we would like to support, build, develop etc. This is a Not-for-profit/charitable arm of the Open Collective, known as the ‘Gift Collective’.
You can also view the Ngā Hapū o Te Ahuahu Communications, Open Collective page HERE where you can see our past projects and all contributions, grants, and payments made. We are winding this down to only manage t-shirt/merch sales etc to pay for communications/website costs.
What is Open Collective?
Open Collective is a platform where communities can collect and disburse money transparently, to sustain and grow their projects.
Their open-source software platform engages contributors and supporters and automates admin.
How does it work?
The Open Collective platform provides tools for legal entities to fiscally sponsor (called a Fiscal Host) Collectives under their umbrella, empowering people to create associations without friction.
This lets us to 1. Collect financial contributions. 2. Pay bills and reimburse expenses. 3. Provide automatic budget transparency. 4. Transact without incorporating our own legal entity.
Currently, the hapū communications team is a ‘collective’ as ‘Nga Hapu o Te Ahuahu Communications, and our fiscal host is ‘Open Collective NZ’. We have used this platform to sell t-shirts to fund this website, run an event, and attain funding to develop a login area for uri to converse and share documents.
What is Open Collective NZ?
What is a Fiscal Host?
A fiscal host is an organization that welcomes others to operate through their structure, so collectives can use the host’s legal entity and bank account instead of setting up their own. The host provides administrative services, oversight, and support. A Fiscal Host is an entity that holds the money on behalf of a Collective, and takes care of accounting, taxes, and invoices.
What is the Gift Collective?
Gift Collective helps charitable initiatives to get up and running quickly—ready to receive philanthropic grants, provide donation tax receipts, manage expenses, and spend money—without getting bogged down in paperwork. The Gift Collective is a fiscal host and the Charitable arm of Open Collective NZ.
In November 2022 at our quarterly hapū hui it was agreed that Ngā Hapū o Te Ahuahu would apply to be a collective under the Charitable arm of the Open Collective NZ. Comms were successful in applying on behalf of Ngā Hapū o Te Ahuahu, with Open Collective NZ happy with the application. Below is the link to our collective ready-for hapū projects.
